SEND Inclusion Award

St John Southworth RC Primary School

Impact statement:

The school has a clear vision which promotes meeting the special educational needs of pupils to ensure that they achieve the best possible academic and other outcomes for the pupils. A parent who had experienced inadequate SEND provision in another school, said 'this school has been absolutely brilliant'. Pupil feedback has shown that children feel safe and supported and pupils said 'teachers help me and I like it, it's just right'. There are effective systems in place to support the early identification of individual needs with observations and a cause for concern form completed. Each child on the SEND register has an individual 'working' Provision of Pupil Support (POP) document which includes individual targets and progress is recorded in an attractive visual individual learning journey. Key impacts include but not limited to:

  • Encouraged increased reflection
  • Increased accountability with effective monitoring and evaluation
  • Encouraged the celebration of effective practice
  • Transitions are well supported for pupils with SEND where need is identified.
  • In the last two years whole-school CPD training on neuro-diversity, autism, ADHD, trauma and deregulation have all taken place
  • Learning Journey's are shared with parents at termly and annual reviews and parents have reported that they are 'really helpful'.
  • Additional interventions such as sensory circuits, strategies to support fine motor skills, speech and language, and social stories are allocated as appropriate.
  • Adapted and individual curriculums are set for children with SEND dependent on the individual needs of the child.

Headteacher comments:
'Undertaking the assessment for the award and then successfully achieving the SENDIA Award has had a positive impact on all members of our school family.  It has allowed us to become more reflective on supporting the children with SEND in school, we have looked at other ways of assessment and evidencing this and worked more with our families of SEND children.  I am very proud of our achievements and I know that the next steps identified will create further exciting and challenging opportunities for our children and allow them to continue to make progress.'
